Canadian coffee shop officially changes name of 'Americano' in response to Trump tariff

One Canadian business is taking a creative approach in its opposition to President Donald Trump's new tariffs.
The Duncan Garage Cafe and Bakery in Duncan, British Columbia recently posted a video to its Instagram account showing that it was changing the name of the Americano beverage on its menu and calling it the "Canadiano" instead. As the song "Takin' Care of Business" by Bachman Turner Overdrive plays in the background, a barista arm is seen wiping away "Americano" on its chalkboard and christening the new beverage — without changing any other menu items.
"Three months into 2025 and the US is getting 'freedom fry’d,'" journalist Joseph Zeballos-Roig tweeted.

Typically an Americano is made with a ratio of 1/3 espresso and 2/3 hot water, but coffee lovers occasionally may want to alter that ratio slightly depending on the amount of caffeine they aim to consume. Duncan did not indicate in its post if the ingredients to the beverage had been altered.
As Zeballos-Roig noted, the Duncan Garage Cafe and Bakery's latest stunt is reminiscent of the anti-French sentiment in the mid-2000s, during the height of the Iraq War. During a United Nations Security Council session, France made it clear that it would not support the United States' invasion of Iraq, which outraged then-Rep. Bob Ney (R-Ohio). He then had the french fries on the Capitol cafeteria menu changed to "freedom fries" to protest France's opposition to the war.
In addition to the "freedom fries" moment, Republicans also created their own condiment — "W Ketchup." This was done to draw attention to 2004 Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry's wife, Teresa Heinz Kerry, who is an heir to the Heinz Ketchup fortune. The conservative Washington Times reported at the time that the W Ketchup label (named after then-President George W. Bush) "combines an American flag, a bald eagle and a picture of George Washington."
