We must not accept habitual lying from our leaders

Donald J. Trump is a habitual liar. I know that will probably not come as a shock to anyone. It is, however, something that needs to be said often, and loudly, especially by the press. He is unfit for office, and his penchant for not telling the truth, and by extension, his spokespeople’s inability to be truthful on a consistent basis to the American public, should in itself be an impeachable offense.

We know what happened in 2016 when Facebook became the Wild West of false and misleading stories and ads planted by a foreign government. This is why it is so important that we protect the truth, and prevent politicians and other, possibly nefarious, actors from posting false and misleading ads on social media.

Even the FTC (Federal Trade Commission) states on their website:

When consumers see or hear an advertisement, whether it’s on the Internet, radio or television, or anywhere else, federal law says that ad must be truthful, not misleading, and, when appropriate, backed by scientific evidence.

The Federal Trade Commission enforces these truth-in-advertising laws, and it applies the same standards no matter where an ad appears – in newspapers and magazines, online, in the mail, or on billboards or buses.

If the FTC applies these standards to products, the same standards must be applied to political ads, no matter where they appear.

The president’s constant lying is not only impacting how American citizens relate to our government, it also impacts our foreign relations. How can any nation, friend or foe, take him at his word? If he threatens a rouge nation with sanctions, or military force, they are not going to believe him. If he offers aid, how can they trust the aid will arrive, let alone keep coming? How can our allies expect us to honor our commitments with the constant stream of lies he tells? How can any nation ever expect to negotiate in good faith with a person who lies as much as Trump does?

If you are a parent you do your best to teach your children not to be habitual liars. Now everyone tells white lies from time to time—and to expect anyone to be completely honest at all times is really an unrealistic expectation. That being said, there is a difference between that and what we see come out of the president’s mouth, his Twitter feed, and his staff’s responses. He is a habitual liar, he lies so much, and so often that I doubt he can even recognize what is real and what is a lie anymore.

When this is all over, and Trump has gone down in the annals of history as the worst U.S. president of any era and his sycophants and followers distance themselves from him, it is my hope that after this national nightmare is over, that we can begin to hold our leaders to a higher standard; That we will no longer have to tolerate a leader who habitually lies, and just flat-out makes up stories. That someone who is unqualified as Trump was and is can never reach the Oval Office again.

The cult of faux outrage

We live in a world where we are outraged over everything. A black man kneels in silent protest during the national anthem at a football game, and conservatives across America become unhinged in a patriotic fervor, demanding that he stand, hand on heart, during “The Star Spangled Banner”—anything else being an insult to the troops, veterans, and military members who never came home.

America is in rapid moral decline

We have all seen the self-righteous memes in our social media feeds, and the message is always some variation of the following: American morals are going to hell in a handbasket. Yes, our nation is moral decay, according to a 2015 opinion piece from the National Review. Per the author of that piece, we liberals are hellbent on destroying America, what with our divorcing, single-parenting, social justice-backing, non-educating, homosexual-loving, art-hating ways. He was right, back in 2015, about the morals of this nation being in decay. But the issue with moral decay in this country has little to with divorce, non-traditional family units, rock n’ roll, or hip hop. It also has nothing to do with liberals.

They will do everything they can do to save a cluster of cells, going so far as to call it life—yet, once born, those babies are on their own. They will protect the unborn, but are happy to send that child to war at age 18. Of course, that is just the tip of the iceberg.

In their quest for power, those so concerned with declining morals have gone out of the way to elect an immoral man into the highest office in the land.

An office that should be held to the highest of standards is now occupied by a man who is morally and ethically bankrupt. The party that impeached a president for lying about a blowjob now refuses to do anything to stop a president who as of April 29 of this year, per the Washington Post, has lied 10,000 times. He has, per the Mueller report, obstructed justice. His attempts to obstruct justice are laid out in this linked article from Lawfare so that anyone can see what he did was illegal. But so far, as of this writing, only one Republican congressman has come out in favor of impeaching Trump.

Of course, his lying is just the beginning. He has cheated on all of his wives. We know of at least one time where he paid off a porn star to keep quiet about an affair. It is almost a certainty that he has paid off others for their silence.

If America is in a moral decline, it is purely because those on the political right, those who claim the moral high ground, are the least moral people in the country. They chose hate over love, they chose lies over truth, and they chose the most immoral man in the country to lead our nation.

How Trump became the GOP's useful idiot

With the release of the Mueller report, it is quite clear that Donald Trump has obstructed justice and lied to the American people, and, while there are no definitive links between Russia and his campaign, it is pretty clear that Russia helped him and his campaign, and that the Republican Party does not care.

On October 10, 1952, at a campaign stop in Syracuse, New York, Harry S. Truman said,

Socialism is a scare word they have hurled at every advance the people have made in the last 20 years.

Socialism is what they called public power. Socialism is what they called social security.

Socialism is what they called farm price supports.

Socialism is what they called bank deposit insurance.

Socialism is what they called the growth of free and independent labor organizations.

Socialism is their name for almost anything that helps all the people.

When the Republican candidate inscribes the slogan "Down With Socialism" on the banner of his "great crusade," that is really not what he means at all.

What he really means is, "Down with Progress--down with Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal," and "down with Harry Truman's fair Deal." That is what he means.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

To reiterate, ensuring a nation’s population has health care, public education, and safe and secure infrastructure is not now, nor has it ever been socialism. Mitch McConnell knows this, but he does not care. The only thing he cares about are the big-money donors to the Republican Party, keeping them happy with low or even nonexistent corporate taxes and low tax rates on the rich so the money will keep rolling in to the Republican Party. All he has to do is dangle social issues and the word “socialism” in front of the Republican base, and the votes and money keep coming.

We have real problems facing real people in this country. None of these problems will be solved by Donald Trump, and if Mitch McConnell stays in the Senate, he will obstruct everything the Democrats try and do. One thing I am certain of is that McConnell is not a fan of Trump, but Trump is the means to an end for McConnell. McConnell wants to remake the judiciary to lean conservative, and he is playing the long game for it to happen—and Trump? He is just McConnell’s useful idiot to attain that goal.

Do Republicans really think we're this stupid?

During my lifetime, I have seen and heard some amazing things. I have seen a president resign in disgrace. I have seen a president lose his shot at a second term because he was too honest. I have seen a president who likely had dementia act his way through two terms, and set the stage for the nation we have today. I have seen a so-so president lead us into war, and his successor impeached for lying about getting a blowjob. Then we had a president elected by the slimmest of margins in an election decided by the Supreme Court, then eight years of war and incompetence. That was followed by eight years of an intelligent, wise president who was dogged by a hostile opposition party that stole a Supreme Court seat from him.

In the Federalist PapersFederalist 51 is quite clear that each branch of government is equal, and that each branch shall hold the other branches accountable.

TO WHAT expedient, then, shall we finally resort, for maintaining in practice the necessary partition of power among the several departments, as laid down in the Constitution? The only answer that can be given is, that as all these exterior provisions are found to be inadequate, the defect must be supplied, by so contriving the interior structure of the government as that its several constituent parts may, by their mutual relations, be the means of keeping each other in their proper places.

Almost every day Trump tweets out some inane nonsense proclaiming his innocence and whining about ongoing investigations. The worst thing this lying conman could have done was run for public office, as it was virtually guaranteed that all of his misdeeds, financial crimes, and dalliances would come to light. But the Republican majority stayed silent, or even defended Trump.

Now that the Democrats have the majority in the House, at least one part of our government is performing the oversight of the executive branch that has been sorely needed. The House Oversight Committee panel questioning of Trump’s personal attorney Michael Cohen was just the start. From that we now know with absolute certainty, with the evidence Cohen provided, that Trump cheated on his wife with a porn star, and then paid her off to prevent that news from getting out during the election.

Remember: The party that impeached a president for lying about a blow job seems to be okay with this.

“I think most of us have a concern anytime you have a president who is trying to work through some very personal matters. I honestly think this president loves his family, and I think it has as much to do with trying not to have public discussions about something that is, for him, a private matter that he didn’t want to have discussed with his family.”

“Every time I think about this, I think about that particular issue because I think he really does care about his family, I think he loves his family, and I don’t think he wanted his family to go through this.” Sen. Mike Rounds, R-S.D. said when asked in an interview with CNN Wednesday if he was "OK" with Trump paying hush money to a porn star while in the White House.

Maybe it is just me, but if you love your family, you do not cheat with a porn star shortly after your wife gives birth to your son!

At a time when we should be focusing on the real issues of the day, like climate change, we have to deal with a lying, two-bit conman who throws Twitter tantrums. Meanwhile, his sycophants do all they can to undermine anything the Democrats do to make life better for all Americans. The Green New Deal is not going to take away hamburgers, airplanes, cars, or anything else they have scared the right into believing.

Do the Republicans think that we do not see what they are doing? Do they really think we are this fucking stupid?

It is time for our elected Democratic representatives to stand up to their Republican counterparts and demand accountability, and implore them to stand for country over party. We can all see that Trump is deteriorating with every speech and tweet. Republican Party leaders should be ashamed of what they have allowed, and the Democrats need to remind them of this shame every single day until Trump is removed from office, resigns, or loses in 2020.

Rock Star Blames Unions for Music's Downfall, But Venue Workers Aren't the Problem

I love music. I mean I really love it. I play guitar (poorly, but I get an A for effort), I go see live bands whenever I can—especially local talent. There really isn’t a genre of music that I don’t like, but if there is one style I like above the rest it is heavy metal. I cut my teeth on metal music when I was a teen dealing with an alcoholic parent and staring down the barrel of a future that I really did not want. I found solace in the lyrics and screaming power chords of songs written by Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Accept, Metallica, Motley Crue, Black Sabbath, and Ozzy Osbourne just to name a few. Today, that same music takes me back to my youth, makes me feel young again.

Even today, some 30 years later, I still keep up on my heavy metal heroes. While I am no longer a 16-year-old kid reading Circus magazine over my lunch hour, I do follow several bands on Facebook so that I can keep up with the comings and goings of my favorites. So it was no surprise when Robb Flynn’s (singer/guitarist for Machine Head) blog popped up in my feed. What I was not prepared for was an anti-union rant about the music industry.

Wow, sounds like a great show! Wish I could have seen it back in the day. Unfortunately, this is the high point of this blog post. It goes downhill from here.

I tell you right now though, there isn't a band out there who would play til 2:30 AM nowadays, let alone find a major venue that would even ALLOW such a thing.
While he is right about major venues, I know a lot of little bars in Wisconsin that bring in a band and they will play through to bar time. But we are not talking about the Harmony or the High Noon Saloon. We are talking big venues.
Venues these days are mostly run with Union workers. In most major cities, you have to take breaks during the day, where a band can't even sound check for an hour because the union workers need a "break." Nowadays if you play 1 minute past 11PM at any of the large Union venues, it costs the band $1,000 dollars a minute. When we were out with Metallica playing arenas they regularly play 20 minutes past 11:00PM, and they regularly paid $20,000 to do so.

Only the Metallica's and Pearl Jam's can pull things like this. Bands that have sold millions of records, and they can afford it.

Now this is where he lost me. The reason those unions are in place is not to screw the bands, but to protect the worker. If I work at a concert venue and the show runs 20 minutes over who is going to pay me overtime? The venue has contracted for a certain amount of time, in that time is labor costs. If you go over that time the labor has to stay there, and someone has to pay for that labor. I would also like to point out that these union workers at these venues also have homes and families. I assume that they would like to be able to go home and spend time with them.

Let’s go back to the Journey/Montrose show that Mr. Flynn was discussing in the first part of his blog post. The one where there were so many encores that the show went on until 2:30 AM. Did he ever think that the reason the unions came in and negotiated breaks and end times was because of shows that went on to the wee morning hours? These union workers do not work for free. I would not expect Machine Head to sign a contract to play for two hours and I come in and demand that they play for four hours while only receiving two hours worth of pay, and Mr. Flynn should not expect the union workers at the venues he plays at to work 12 hours for eight hours pay.

Now his rant is about how screwed up the music industry is today—he will get no argument from me on that; however, to blame unions for the problem is like saying teachers and other public servants caused the Great Recession.
