Because New York State Attorney General Letitia James' fraud case against Donald Trump and the Trump Organization is civil — not criminal — the former president isn't obligated to appear during the trial. But he has been showing up in Justice Arthur Engoron's New York City courtroom nonetheless. And conservative attorney George Conway — one of Trump's most scathing critics on the right — laid out some reasons why during a Monday, October 30 appearance on MSNBC's "Morning Joe."

James alleges that the Trump Organization seriously inflated the value of its real estate assets — an allegation that Engoron has agreed with. Now, it's a question of what sanctions Trump and his company will face.

When host Mika Brzezinski asked Conway if James' case "gets" Trump "where it really hurts," the attorney responded, "Yes, I fundamentally agreed with that. In a way, I think it's even more fundamental. This puts him out of business. This case is putting him out of business…. And that's his essence."

The attorney noted that the fines imposed on Trump in the case could "get bigger and bigger" if he "misbehaves" and keeps attacking Engoron publicly.

Conway went on to say, "I think he's terrified that he's not going to have the Trump Tower. And he's not going to have all the things he has bragged about for decades…. He won't be able to run a business, and the question is: How much of his money is he going to be allowed to keep from that? And that, to him, is striking at the core of Donald Trump."
