'Just disgusting': Joe Scarborough slams Alito for displaying MAGA symbol after Jan. 6

On Thursday, May 16, the New York Times' Jodi Kantor reported that on January 17, 2021 — only 11 days after the attack on the U.S. Capitol Building — an upside-down flag was hanging outside Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito's home in Alexandria, Virginia. An inverted flag, after the 2020 presidential race, became a symbol of the "Stop the Steal" movement and efforts to overturn the election results.

Alito told the Times, "I had no involvement whatsoever in the flying of the flag. It was briefly placed by Mrs. Alito in response to a neighbor's use of objectionable and personally insulting language on yard signs."

But MSNBC's Joe Scarborough, during the May 17 broadcast of "Morning Joe," found Alito's explanation weak and unconvincing.

Scarborough, joined by "Morning Joe" co-host Mika Brzezinski, MSNBC colleague Willie Geist and liberal Washington Post columnist Eugene Robinson, attacked Alito as disgraceful.

The Never Trump conservative angrily told his colleagues, "For a guy who is a Supreme Court justice (to) let that happen at this own home in one of the most fraught times in American history since the Civil War, it's just sad. And it shows how little respect he has for the institution. It shows how little respect he has for the law. It's disgusting. It's just disgusting."

Geist interjected that on January 17, 2021, the United States was still "completely shaken by what had happened on January 6."

Robinson was vehemently critical of Alito as well, arguing that a U.S. Supreme Court justice like Alito "is supposed to be non-political."

Robinson told the "Morning Joe" panel, "I've said for a long time that Alito is the worst justice. He is one of the worst justices that we have seen on the Supreme Court since the days of Roger Taney and the other justices that enabled decades of Jim Crow. His opinions have always struck me as intellectually dishonest, clearly tailed to come out to a pre-determined result. And now this. It's just stunning to me."
