While Donald Trump battles two criminal indictments, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-California) and many members of his caucus are defending the former president vigorously and accusing prosecutors of acting out of pure partisanship. McCarthy is also pointing the finger at President Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden, claiming that an "impeachment inquiry" may be needed in light of his family's business activities in foreign countries.

During a Monday night, July 24 appearance on Fox News, McCarthy told host Sean Hannity, "When Biden was running for office, he told the public he has never talked about business. He said his family has never received a dollar from China, which we prove is not true. We've only followed where the information has taken us. But Hannity, this is rising to the level of impeachment inquiry, which provides Congress the strongest power to get the rest of the knowledge and information needed."

The Guardian's Michael Sainato observes that McCarthy's "claim of a looming impeachment inquiry" follows Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Nebraska) and House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-Kentucky) releasing an "FBI form containing unverified allegations of corruption related to Hunter Biden's work for Burisma, a Ukraine-based energy company."

Ian Sams, special assistant to Biden and a senior adviser to the White House Counsel's Office, was quick to slam McCarthy for his talk of impeachment.

On July 24, Sams tweeted, "Instead of focusing on the real issues Americans want us to address like continuing to lower inflation or create jobs, this is what the @HouseGOP wants to prioritize. Their eagerness to go after @POTUS regardless of the truth is seemingly bottomless."

Politico's Jordain Carney notes that House Republicans "have been under fierce pressure from their base who are eager to see them impeach Biden or another high-ranking administration official after former President Donald Trump was twice impeached."
