MAGA extremists are freaking out over Trump’s endorsement in Alabama Senate race

On Friday, June 10, former President Donald Trump endorsed Katie Britt over Rep. Mo Brooks in Alabama’s GOP U.S. Senate primary — exalting her as a “fearless America First warrior.” Trump was once an ally of Brooks; now, he is slamming the Alabama congressman as “woke.” But some MAGA Republicans disagree strongly with Trump’s endorsement of Britt, including former Trump spokesperson Katrina Pierson and Fox News host Mark Levin.
On Trump’s social media platform Truth Social, Levin angrily wrote, “This is a gut punch. Very disappointing. Britt is a McConnell-supported RINO praised by the head of the Alabama Democrat Party. I hope Mo can pull it off. Lord knows, we need his conservative voice and vote in the Senate.”
On Twitter, Pierson linked to a March 8 article in Breitbart that accuses Britt of surrounding herself with Never Trump conservatives. Pierson wrote, “This Katie Britt?”

Britt has been the frontrunner in the primary, which has gone to a runoff. Candidate Mike Durant was in third place in the initial primary election, but Britt and Brooks were close enough in the vote count for them to go to a runoff that will be held on June 21.
In his endorsement of Britt, Trump argued, “The opposition says Katie is close to Mitch McConnell, but actually, she is not — in fact, she believes that McConnell put Mike Durant in the race to stop her, which is very possibly true.”
Writer Ryan Girdusky is another MAGA Republican who is angry that Trump endorsed Britt. On June 10, Girdusky tweeted, “Oh fuck off. Mo is the one.”

The Daily Beast’s Zachary Petrizzo, in an article published on June 12, observes, “The endorsement of Britt comes at a critical time for both campaigns. The primary runoff is in less than two weeks after neither candidate could secure 50% of the vote in the primary race. In April 2021, Trump endorsed Brooks, only to revoke the endorsement after Brooks urged Trump supporters to move on from claims that the 2020 election was ‘stolen.’”
Brooks is pointing out how much flip-flopping Trump has done in Alabama’s Republican U.S. Senate primary.
Petrizzo quotes Brooks as saying, “This is weird: last time Donald Trump talked about Katie Britt, he said she was unqualified for the Senate. Donald Trump is the only man in American politics who could get conned by Mitch McConnell twice in an Alabama Senate race.”
