Fred Guttenberg, a gun control advocate and father of slain Parkland student Jaime Guttenberg, lavished praise onto Matthew McConaughey on Tuesday after the actor delivered an emotional plea for gun control at the White House.
"So, where do we start? We start by making the right choices on the issue that is in front of us today," said McConaughey. "We start by making laws that save innocent lives and don't infringe on our second amendment rights. We start right now by voting to pass policies that can keep us from having as many columbines, Sandy Hooks, Parklands, Las Vegases, Buffalos, and Uvaldes from here on. We start by giving Alithia a chance to be spoiled by her dad. We start by giving Maite a chance to become a marine biologist. We start by giving Ellie a chance to read her Bible verse at the Wednesday night service. We start by giving Irma and Joe a chance to finish painting their house, maybe retire, and get that food truck. We start by giving McKenna, Layla, Eliahana, Annabell, Jackie, Eva, Amerie and Lexi — start by giving all of them our promise that their dreams are not going to be forgotten. We start by making the loss of these lives matter. Thank you, thank you."
During an appearance on MSNBC's Deadline White House, Guttenberg was extremely moved by McConaughey's prose and expanded on the Uvalde, Texas native's point.
"Listen, Matthew McConaughey, if I could give him a bear hug right now, I would, because he hit, he said everything. A couple of things that stood out: responsible gun owners are fed up with the Second Amendment being hijacked. Thank you for being a responsible gun owner and saying that as loudly as you did. This has never been about the Second Amendment," Guttenberg said.
"Saving lives never has been. This has never been about taking something away from responsible people. This has always been about saving lives," he continued. "I'm going to cry again. If I could give you a hug, I would, and we need more responsible gun owners to step up and say that."
