Comedian Jon Stewart has long been a savvy politico who frequently interacts with lawmakers on Capitol Hill. Calls for him to put his name on a ballot reliably circulate during most election cycles.

On Thursday, Stewart teased doing just that. Speaking with The New York Times's Kara Swisher on Thursday's edition of her podcast, Sway, Stewart revealed that he is sometimes forced to consider running for office because of the terrible job that the "shitheads" in power are doing.

A transcript of the exchange is below:

Swisher:

Did you ever think about running for public office?

Stewart:

Oh, god. How do you not? When you see the shitheads that are —

Swisher:

Yeah.

Stewart:

How do you not when you watch all that and you’re like, oh my god, what is — this is terrible. It’s like when you get in a car and the one driver’s drunk and you’re like, do you everything about taking the wheel? You’re like, yeah, I did.

Swisher:

So, and?

Stewart:

I don’t know that I’d have the temperament for it, and I don’t know, again, that that would be —

Swisher:

What would be your temperament problem given the politicians we see arrayed before us? I mean, we’ve got Marjorie Taylor Greene. Over here, we’ve got Trump. We’ve got —

Stewart:

Oh, yeah, no. It’s patience with that. It’s having the patience that, how come that person gets to still be here? Make that person leave.

Swisher:

Well, AOC’s done a good job saying that, saying those things like that.

Stewart:

Yes. No, I, listen, I also think there’s a lot that goes around that that has nothing to do with passion or care about issues or wanting to help people, that has to do with fundraising and the way the game is played and the lack of perspective on it. And sometimes I feel like, well, I can be more effective on the outside than on the inside.
