Seth Meyers reminds Trump: Russia’s assault on Ukraine ‘isn’t a real estate deal’

With Russian troops, under orders from President Vladimir Putin, having launched a full-fledged invasion of Ukraine, the Biden Administration and its NATO allies are moving ahead with economic sanctions against Russia. Former President Donald Trump, meanwhile, has been praising Putin as a strong leader. And comedian/“Late Night” host Seth Meyers humorously slammed Trump for his comments, reminding him that a military invasion of a sovereign democracy isn’t a real estate deal in Atlantic City.
At a MAGA fundraiser at Mar-a-Lago on Wednesday, February 23, Trump said of the Russian president, “Putin’s smart. I mean, he’s taking over a country for $2 worth of sanctions. I’d say that’s pretty smart. He’s taking over a country.... a great piece of land with a lot of people, and just walking right in.”

Meyers, during the February 24 broadcast of “Late Night,” told his audience, “So, if you were like most people, you were shocked and horrified. But if you were Donald Trump, apparently you were at Mar-a-Lago watching it with a bunch of Palm Beach plastic surgeons and their third wives and thinking, ‘You really got to hand it to Vladimir Putin.’”
Meyers’ comments became even more biting after that.
“First of all, stop talking about everything like it’s a fucking real estate deal,” Meyers told the “Late Night” audience. “It’s an illegal war against a sovereign nation, not an empty lot in Atlantic City. Second, if you ever find yourself at a fancy high-dollar fundraiser clinking champagne glasses while the keynote speaker applauds an illegal and catastrophic war that will cause mass suffering and destabilize an entire continent, maybe take a moment to text your therapist and ask, ‘Am I a bad person?’””
After the Mar-a-Lago event, Trump promoted the Big Lie when he called into Laura Ingraham’s show on Fox News and said that the Ukraine invasion would not have happened were it not for a “rigged election” in the United States in 2020.
Meyers, on “Late Night,” said, “How does he do it? How does he find a way to connect everything to his rigged election bullshit?”
