Kevin McCarthy's damning remarks on Trump's link to the Jan. 6 attack re-emerge — even if he'd like to forget
As the House Select Committee's insurrection investigation continues, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) is facing more scrutiny for his previous remarks that are now coming back to haunt him.
According to CNN, McCarthy previously made public and private remarks admitting former President Donald Trump did bear some responsibility for what transpired at the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. The publication also offered a breakdown of the number of times McCarthy actually made that claim.
One of the first dates noted is January 11, 2021. According to a readout of McCarthy's remarks that were obtained by CNN, the top Republican lawmaker spoke before House Republicans about Trump.
"Let me be clear to you and I have been very clear to the President. He bears responsibility for his words and actions. No if ands or buts," McCarthy said. "I asked him personally today if he holds responsibility for what happened. If he feels bad about what happened. He told me he does have some responsibility for what happened. But he needs to acknowledge that."
The following day, McCarthy appeared on the Bakersfield, Calif.-based radio station, KERN. "I say he has responsibility," McCarthy said of Trump. "He told me personally that he does have some responsibility. I think a lot of people do."
During a previous interview, McCarthy is also said to have discussed his call with the former president while the riots were underway. According to McCarthy, he reportedly urged Trump to deploy the National Guard, publicly address the situation, and encourage rioters to stand down.
"I spoke to the President during the riot," McCarthy said. "I was the first person to call him. I told him to go on national TV, tell these people to stop it. He said he didn't know what was happening. We went to the news then to work through that. I asked the president, he has a responsibility. You know what the President does, but you know what? All of us do."
He added, "I called the President, told him, bring the national guard, go on television."
The latest report follows McCarthy's refusal to cooperate with the House Select Committee's investigation into the Capitol riots.
