Nancy Pelosi just slapped down Trump's pitiful plea to deliver the State of the Union

News & Politics

Nancy Pelosi is not putting up with President Donald Trump's embarrassing attempts to insist on delivering a State of the Union address to Congress, despite her rescinding the offer in the wake of the government shutdown.

On Wednesday afternoon, she sent a letter to Trump in response to a message from him earlier in the day. He had said that, despite her refusal, he would still deliver the State of the Union in the House of Representatives on Jan. 29. She responded by saying that, no, in fact, he won't.

Her letter was written with the formality of official communications from the legislature — but it was clearly a searing rebuke.

"I am writing to inform you that the House of Representatives will not consider a concurrent resolution authorizing the President’s State of the Union address in the House Chamber until government has opened,” she wrote.

Trump's letter, below, came in his usual style, littered with erroneous capitalizations. He emphasized the fact that Pelosi had already invited him previously to give the State of the Union before rescinding the offer. Pelosi has claimed that, because of the shutdown, she has concerns about the safety of the event. While Trump insists that the Department of Homeland Security and Secret Service believe they can maintain safety, the FBI has already said that the shutdown is inhibiting its ability to keep the country safe from various threats, including terrorism.

Ultimately, as House speaker, it is within Pelosi's authority to determine what happens in the chamber.
