WATCH: John Oliver Eviscerates Tobacco Industry Giants
After all the public health campaigns, advertising efforts and parental lectures, it seems Americans have finally gotten the point: smoking cigarettes kills. Smoking rates in the U.S. have dropped from 43 percent in 1965 to 18 percent today.
But as John Oliver demonstrates, Big Tobacco companies are still raking in profits, primarily by redirecting their sales efforts overseas, where smoking rates are still high and regulations are looser. As he put it, “So it’s an aging product that’s decreasing in popularity and yet somehow just can’t seem to stop making money. It’s basically the agricultural equivalent of U2.”
Oliver shares some hilariously misleading tobacco ads and leads us on a world tour of the insane lawsuits industry giants are launching abroad. Check out the full clip.
