Colbert Skewers Piers Morgan and Katie Couric for Inane Interviews with Trans Superstars
With the rising popularity of transgender stars like supermodel Carmen Carrera and author Janet Mock, the trans community seems to be carving a niche more deeply into the national consciousness than ever before. It has been a long, slow rise; even as notions of sexuality evolved within mainstream American culture, many LGBTQ activists have argued that the images and ideas of queer identity still possess the hang-ups of white supremacy and patriarchy. For a long time, they argue, transgendered people were especially excluded in the struggle for equal rights and recognition.
In the clip below, Colbert examines the ineptitude of Katie Couric and Piers Morgan in their interviews with trans superstars. Both of them exhibit a lack of sensitivity and a weird obsession with their guests' genitalia. Both could alleviate their own ignorance by listening a little more closely and developing their empathic capacities a little more consciously. But only Morgan may need to see a medical professional to determine whether he, indeed, suffers from narcissistic personality disorder.
