Celebrate Global Orgasm for Peace Day

By Liz Langley, AlterNet. Posted December 22, 2006.

In the name of peace, find a partner -- or find yourself -- and have an orgasm. Just don't fake it.

When anti-war activists Paul Reffell and Donna Sheehan planned their latest peace-making project -- the synchronized global orgasm -- to fall on Dec. 22, they may not have realized that it's the last Friday before Christmas. It's a day many people take off, and so, have a little extra time on their hands. Sweet coinkydink or a holiday miracle, today's your chance to improve the world -- batteries not included.

The goal of the Synchronized Global Orgasm for Peace (or as I think of it, The Other GOP) is to effect a change in the world's energy by having as many people as possible orgasm while focusing their thoughts on world peace.

The rules are simple: Yes, you can do it on your own. No, there's no specific time. And, no, you can't fake it.

Personally, I hope this will usher in a whole new method of activism -- one that doesn't involve buying poster board. Even if it doesn't work, hey, it's more fun than marching.

But Paul, 76, and Donna, 55, have high hopes for the global orgasm and its potential to counter a widespread yet commonly dismissed problem.

"Human behavior has become so pronouncedly violent and destructive," Paul said in a phone interview. "And it's sort of accepted that way."

The couple wondered what they could do to help change that, so they decided to use the same brand of witty activism that inspired a previous project, Baring Witness. As you might guess from the name, protesters used their naked bodies to create peace-promoting slogans and symbols -- a tactic which drew international notice.

The Global Orgasm for Peace certainly has the same winking cleverness, but it also invites us to consider the power of collective thought. Does what we think really effect anything?

The project's Web site points to the work of another group, the Global Consciousness Project, which is trying to answer that question. Directed by Dr. Roger Nelson, the GCP is a volunteer group of researchers from various disciplines, whose goal is to find out whether collective thought can be measured and scientifically validated.

Here's how it works: The GCP has a series of random event generators (REGs) around the world, each of which produces a random number each second. Using these generators, the GCP has been able to note that sometimes events of global focus cause the patterns to become less random. For example, data collected after certain major events such as the death of Princess Diana and the international Winter Olympics show a greater degree of structure, indicating an increase in shared emotion and collective thinking.

Paul and Donna heard about the REGs, and, Paul said, "wondered what would be the most powerful and the most positive change on consciousness we could make?" They had heard about the influence of mass meditations and decided to take it to the next level.

Of ups and downs...

I'm always torn when i see an idea as fun and apparently (or not) frivolous as something like "Global Orgasm Day" making national news. On the one hand we're all so bombarded with madness, misery and mayhem that it seems, at first blush, a waste of good reporting real estate. However, if we can't find the time, focus, energy and mood for giving joy (be it sexual or not) its due, then what in the world is all this gnashing of teeth over corrupt politics, threatened biosphere and suffering humanity claiming as its real and readily available alternative?

Here the usual poster's rule in AlterNet Comments, "put up (facts) or shut up (your silly posting)", becomes the perhaps equally valid "put out(love) or give up(living)", thus upping the experiential ante.

All philosophy aside (and by no means bragging, but merely because the sun rises over Moscow on this "Day 'o the O" before, say, New York), I'd like to confess that the gods of loving hanky-panky seem to be smiling on us all during this first-ever beta-version world-wide pleasure-fest. We snuck-in a quick romp last night by slipping off to a quite side room at a friend's pre-NewYear's party (yes, yes after 12am!) and still found the friskiness to bother the neighbors when we got back to our flat around 2.

So here's wishing all our beloved AlterNet friends, family (and "foe) a very merry rollicking romp and a happy new O!

In the spirit of giving, instead of having an orgasm everyone should be giving orgasms, as many as possible. Instead of not giving a damn we each should give an orgasm or more, especially to those who need it the most like the Bushies. Do the Bushies have orgasms when fucking us all up?

I understand the French have a euphemism for orgasm - "petit mort" - might be worth pondering a little - along with decadence and nihilism.

But isn't it kind of useless if there isn't an exact time? I thought global consciousness events had to be synchronized in order to produce an effect. I guess too many people would have difficulty making the deadline!

When necessary, let's not forget to properly protect ourselves. After all, we wouldn't want to create or contribute to an epidemic.

What this article does best is infer something that the mainstream media wants us to ignore: that things are better now than they have ever been before! How many papers can you sell with headlines that say "Everything is Fine"?

Despite the colossal quagmire in Iraq--and a host of other looming boogeymen--there are less wars today, less refugees, less slaves, less hungry, and less sick. And I believe it is because, as this article infers, for the first time in history, the technology of ecstacy is allowed free reign over an enlightening planet.

It is no accident that the high holiday coming up is celebrated just when things are darkest and coldest. Even the grinch knows that negative movements can be forestalled and even driven back through reveling and love. So go it it, people!

This is just the sort of nonsense I've come to expect from left wing weenies. I would make a better suggestion. Why don't you all try to make it a "global suicide day" for left wing wankers. Now there is something that will truly achieve something positive. A world without left wing red diaper doper babies is a much better world for normal people to live in.

This is the biggest waste of time and thought to grace these pages in quite a while. Peace through orgasms?!! How about peace through science, peace through charity, or peace through hard work. Wake up people. This is the same kind of feel good bull that ruined the potential of the New Left. If progressives don't stop thinking with their bleeding hearts and start thinking with their heads, the forces of modern evil will take advantage of their weakness from here to kingdom come. It is so frustrating to see this crap.

File this story along with the conspiracy theroies, JFK, the Masons, the Tri-Laterals, Kirlian photography and UFO's. I really don't mind, perhaps it's nice to have some silliness once in a while, but this does give ammo to the Right wingers trying to discredit the Left. Of course, 30,000 more troops to Iraq is just as much superstition as this idea is, if anyone expects more troops to really bring about results, but seriously, on the Left, I think we have to get away from believing in ghosts and the tooth-fairy to save the day for us!

Too many people know far too little about the power of sexuality and the energy it can generate. If Americans studied more Tantra and sexual Chi Kung, etc. and studied less T & A, they might get it. Actually, they might "get it" better than they ever thought possible!

A Totally Sick & Irresponsible Article
Posted by: faultroy on Dec 23, 2006 2:43 AM
Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
I am truly surprised that Alternet would run such a sick and totally irresponsible article.
Aside from the fact that suggesting a global "fuckfest," will undoubtedly increase the spread of AIDS, genital diseases of the most common kind not to mention the high probability of unwanted pregnancies, but this article also reinforces the idea that sex is fun, nonchalant and non commital--a theory that is consistently propounded by leftist Feminists.
On the one hand, they wail and rail about the unfairness of
a male dominated society forcing them to utilize their vaginas for male pleasure profit and to engender economic slavery yet on the other they vehemently and shrilly scream and demand the right to screw with alacrity and demented irresponsibility.
"We women demand our Orgasms!!!!" but only on our terms and if a male is involved: according to the Feminist Mantra--it is debasing, dehumanizing and enslaving.
Of course the author being a woman, and totally vaginally
fixated-- as all women are--- sees nothing wrong with fucking for peace love and the right to copulate with all the authority and ferocity of a Bobono in heat. Never mind the consequences--that is until it is time for more government programs to "educate children" on the use of condoms, sex and more social irresponsibility--oh sorry I meant "responsibility."
We need to cut down on unwed pregnancies, AIDS and genital diseases by teaching children how to have sex more efficiently and safely these "authorities on sex," coyly inform us; all the while with their hands stretched out for more government grants, state mandated programs and of course
fund raisers to generate more personal wealth--Uh no, I mean "responsible programs".
Next these psycho feminists--using the same logic--will inform us that according to their "studies," we should teach high school children how to efficiently handle UZIES and Automatic Weapons because obviously showing them how to properly and safely handle killing weapons will increase safety and cut down on unwanted mass killings.
Let's not forget that our intrepid author even managed to throw in a few "Psychobabbalists" into the story to give it "scholarly legitimacy." You might want to keep this in mind while reading the next Feminist oriented article quoting a "study," by the flavor of the month faux PHd or Doctor.
This is just another sad example of the twisted logic and schizophrenic behavior by the current crop of pin- headed addle brained rank and file feminists supposedly setting a national agenda for women. There seems to be no continuity of thought: they think with their crotches and seem to consistently confuse reasoned logic with "if it feels good it has to be right."
It's no wonder so many Independents are embracing the
Religious Right. They are the only ones with even a modicum of values.
I really think we can do better.

History time. The original "International Simultaneous Orgasm" was scheduled for 3:10 a.m. GMT on October 17, 1983. That is the claim made in THE 80s: A LOOK BACK AT THE TUMULTUOUS DECADE 1980-1989. Published in 1979 (yes, 1979), it was "edited" by Tony Hendra, Christopher Cerf, and Peter Elbling. One of my favorites was the LIFE magazine lookalike, HALF-LIFE: THE MAGAZINE OF THE NUCLEAR FAMILY. HALF-LIFE carried stories like "Using Your Wife to Heat the Bathwater."
