Legal expert: Kevin McCarthy’s Biden impeachment inquiry is 'brazen and ridiculous'

During the 2022 midterms, many Democrats warned that if Republicans gained control of the U.S. House of Representatives, they would impeach President Joe Biden. And sure enough, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-California) announced, on September 12, that he is pursuing an impeachment inquiry.

In a scathing article published by the conservative website The Bulwark on September 25, law professor Kimberly Wehle — a former federal prosecutor — argues that McCarthy's announcement has been a "political snoozer" that shows "zero evidence of specific wrongdoing by Joe Biden."

Wehle goes on to cite four ways in which McCarthy's "brazen and ridiculous" stunt "adds to the devaluing of" an important "constitutional safeguard."

POLL: Should Trump be allowed to hold office again?

They are: (1) "The inquiry has nothing to do with Biden's conduct as president," (2) "The voters elected Biden knowing that his son's behavior has, at times, been problematic," (3) "Prior impeachment inquiries were launched based on evidence, not the mere hope that evidence might be found," and (4) "Prior speakers of the House of Representatives had enough votes from their own caucuses to open formal impeachment inquiries against their respective presidents; McCarthy does not."

"People like Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) have reportedly demanded investigations into Biden in exchange for a vote on a short-term spending bill," Wehle observes. "For regular Americans, these machinations are too in-the-weeds to warrant a side glance."
