'What happened in the 4th year?' Twitter bulldozes Mike Pence's defense of Donald Trump's record

Economy

Former Vice President Mike Pence on Thursday took to Twitter to tout what he believes are the accomplishments of ex-President Donald Trump's administration and compared their time in the White House to the presidency of Calvin Coolidge in the 1920s.

"Like Coolidge, our administration got the government out of the way to unleash the full power of the American economy!" Pence tweeted. "In our first three years, America gained more than 7 million new jobs, unemployment plummeted to the lowest rate in 50 years and more than 10 million people were lifted off of welfare—the largest poverty reduction in modern history!"

In reality, Trump entered office under an economic expansion that began under his predecessor, Barack Obama. But the gargantuan tax cuts that Trump signed into law in 2017 exploded the federal deficit and added trillions of dollars to the national debt. Pence also omitted that his and Trump's systemic mismanagement of the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated the nation's financial stresses – which Republicans now blame on President Joe Biden, whose policies have cut the deficit in half.

Elon Musk made TWITR suck: "Left office with a 6.7% unemployment rate and 4300 covid deaths per day."
