'Not West Wing fantasy': Analyst slams 'conspiratorial' and 'insane' House GOP demands

During Tuesday's episode of MSNBC's Deadline: Whitehouse, The Bulwark Writer-at-Large Tim Miller slammed GOP House members over their unwillingness to unite behind a moderate Republican to fill the vacant Speaker seat.
As the House of Representatives decide how to collectively move forward after ex-Speaker Kevin McCarthy's (R-CA) ouster Tuesday, Wallace asked Miller, "What happens next?"
He replied, "The Republicans are gonna try to put up a more crazy person. What was it? CTC — crazier than Kevin? And here's the thing — I wanna live on Earth three for a second. And I'm sure, from the Hill, you know, you'll tell me this isn't possible. But here's what's happening. The Republicans are giving a demand, the a MAGA part of the conference, another shutdown fight coming up, no money for Ukraine — Anna Paulina Luna, who is a member from Florida, who is not even one of the eight to overthrow Kevin, she said on her demands was defunding Jack Smith, and having a vote on the sham impeachment of Joe Biden. So these are their demands. They are conspiratorial, they're extreme, they're not conservative — they're insane, frankly. That's what the Republican wants of their next speaker. A that's what the Speaker is gonna have to give them, whoever that is. And so here is my question. I keep being told by my Republican friends — ones that will still talk to me — that there are some closet normal Republicans on the Hill. Where are they? It only takes five."
POLL: Should Trump be allowed to hold office again?
Miller continued, "We are not asking for too much. All it takes is five normal Republicans to walk down the hall to Speaker Jeffries' office and say, 'Hey, we care about democracy, we want to fund Ukraine, we don't want to go along with this sham impeachment of Joe Biden. We will cut a deal. You give us policy, border funding, budget cuts, whatever they care about. We, you know, come up with an agreement with you and they could come up with an actual Speaker that would be interested in governing.' That is an option. The Texas House did this with Speaker Joe Straus, a good man, a moderate Republican who took the speakership with the help of Democrats. This is not West Wing fantasy. It's only a fantasy because there aren't even five Republicans in that entire 221 who are willing to say, 'This is insane. I am not going to put an insurrectionist in the speakership.' But as best as I could tell, there aren't five willing to do that. We will see."
