The user's of President Donald Trump's Truth Social platform are typically thought of as his "most ardent supporters," but according to a new report from the New York Times, they have become to turn on him in a big way after the Iran war, with The Daily Beast calling the trend "public humiliation" in his "favorite safe space."
The Times' report turned up "tens of thousands" of recent posts from Truth Social in which users ripped the president to shreds over his decision to join Israel in a joint military assault on Iran. The move has been widely interpreted as perhaps his biggest ever betrayal of his MAGA base, given his frequent insistence that he would avoid more costly foreign wars during his 2024 campaign.
"The responses on Truth Social — numbering in the tens of thousands — offer a snapshot of a simmering criticism from the right that has intensified in recent weeks over Mr. Trump’s decision to go to war in Iran," the Times explained. "While polling suggests that Republicans still broadly support the war, unease and anger are bubbling up on Mr. Trump’s own platform."
Particular outrage has also emerged among these diehard conservative users of Trump's controversial Easter weekend post, in which he used an expletive to threaten the destruction of Iran's "whole civilization."
"You’re utterly destroying your presidency with this nonsense," one user who described themselves as a "committed anti-leftist" posted. "It’s probably too late to course correct at this point. A shameful waste of a great start."
"Mr. President you are losing me as a supporter with this kind of behavior," another user, "AuthenticAmerican," wrote. "I have supported you for so long and I am just to my point where I am ready to wash my hands of supporting you. I have been put through a lot of garbage for supporting you since 2016."
"I don’t support prez yahoo or this kind of talk," another user who called themselves "MAGA, not Republican," wrote. "It’s Easter. What’s wrong with you? I voted x3 for you. WTH is wrong with you?"
"If you do this you will be impeached and convicted for crimes against humanity," user "WWNeall" posted in response to the Easter threat.
"DON'T YOU DARE ATTACK THESE PEOPLE TO JUSTIFY YOUR EGO. YOU WILL NEVER BE ABLE TO JUSTIFY YOURSELF IF YOU DO!!!" user "vlgmdg1011" wrote.
"I am positive that much of your Independent and Libertarian base as well, felt appalled and ashamed with your Easter outburst," user "FreedomForcaster" added.
"Your gonna spend the rest of your life in prison after they impeach you, [JD Vance's] Whitehouse bid is dead in the water and maga is nomore," user "R8TEDR" posted.
The Times noted that Truth Social's user base is "minuscule" compared to other platforms, with only around 6 million estimated users compared to something like X with around 550 million. The users who have flocked to the platform and stuck around are, therefore, considered among the most dedicated Trump loyalists around. The report further noted that the outrage over Iran has been even more pointed than the responses to Trump's handling of the Epstein files, which the outlet called "muted" by comparison.
