While President Donald Trump was busy excoriating the Democrat “scum that spent the last four years trying to destroy our country through warped radical left minds,” one of Trump’s fellow Republicans was demanding Trump reign in Russian leader Vladimir Putin.

Despite invading a U.S. ally who agreed to surrender its nuclear arsenal in exchange for U.S. protection, Trump has had little but praise for Putin’s attacks on his neighbors. He’s publicly described Putin’s annexation of eastern Ukraine provinces as a “genius” move, and he called the Russian dictator “very savvy.”

The affection appears to be mutual. Earlier this year, Putin commissioned a portrait of Trump and delivered it to him. One of Trump’s envoys, Steve Witkoff, told Tucker Carlson in March that the president was “clearly touched” by what he called a “beautiful” portrait.

But this Memorial Day, longtime US Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) appears to have had a "[enough]" of Trump’s approach to Putin.

“I’ve had enuf of Putin killing innocent ppl,” Grassley posted on X, in response to a new volley of Russian drone attacks across Ukraine. “Pres Trump Take action AT LEAST SANCTIONS.”

Grassley has butted heads with Trump on a few occasions. He famously congratulated former VP Mike Pence for refusing to “kowtow” to Trump when he demanded Pence help him overthrow the results of a valid election. Grassley also suggested former President Donald Trump could no longer lead the Republican Party.

Trump announced to the Class of 2025 at West Point on Memorial Day that he was “going back to deal with Russia,” but also shared a Truth Social post calling Putin “CRAZY.”

“I’ve always had a very good relationship with Vladimir Putin of Russia, but something has happened to him," Trump wrote. "He has gone absolutely CRAZY! He is needlessly killing a lot of people, and I’m not just talking about soldiers. Missiles and drones are being shot into Cities in Ukraine, for no reason whatsoever.”

Former Atlantic Council’s Eurasia Center Assistant Director Andrew D’Anieri, who has facilitated the work on Ukraine, Central Asia, and Russia, praised the senator’s call for action.

“The US has lots of options turn up the pressure on Putin to negotiate for real, including more sanctions and military aid to Ukraine,” D’Anieri posted on X.
