In a poll released by CNN in late April, 56 percent of respondents isn't doing enough to check President Donald Trump's power.

CNN host Brianna Keilar discussed the poll with Rep. Dan Meuser (R-Pennsylvania) during a Tuesday afternoon, April 29 broadcast. And it didn't take long for them to get into a debate over the results of Trump's tariffs.

Meuser told Keilar, "Well, I'm in Congress, and we have a separation of powers. And we're all equal portions of our government. And we are assuring that the president's actions are within the Constitution. The Supreme Court does the same. We are looking to codify many of the executive orders that have been done, and there's been many, as you brought out, since January 20…. Sometimes, being a disrupter causes some short-term fallbacks."

When Keilar brought the possibility of Trump's tariffs causing higher prices on Amazon, Meuser responded, "Free trade, for the last 35 years, has really meant unfair trade…. We needed this correction. We needed it desperately."

But when Meuser argued that the U.S. isn't seeing any real inflation yet, Keilar noted that some restaurants are already "putting inflation charges on their bills."

Keilar also pointed out that Trump grew defensive over Amazon's Jeff Bezos addressing price increases, asking Meuser "what's the matter with" showing "transparency in pricing."

Meuser told Keilar, "Look, China's not our enemy, as I put it. They are an adversary. They are a competitor. But we need a reckoning with them. They've taken great advantage of us. We are their number one customer, and by far. And they need to appreciate that their economy is very dependent upon having a good relationship with us. And President Trump is aware of that…. Brianna, we have not experienced any inflation as of yet."

Keilar noted the CNN poll showing that 59 percent of respondents believe Trump is worsening economic conditions, reminding Meuser, "China's the biggest trading partner. That's like the Big Kahuna."
