'Oh, the irony': Trump brutally mocked after attending 'Les Miserables' performance

U.S. President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump attend "Les Miserables" opening night at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., U.S., June 11, 2025.
On Wednesday night, June 11, President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump attended a performance of Victor Hugo's "Les Misérables" at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC. The president, according to Newsweek, was greeted with a combination of "cheers and boos."
Many critics of the president found it ironic that he was going to "Les Misérables," as the story deals with social and economic struggles in France in the 19th Century — including the June Rebellion of 1832 — and the United States is suffering a period of instability during Trump's second term.
Trump's attendance is receiving a lot of reactions on X, formerly Twitter.

Newsweek tweeted, "Trump attended a performance of 'Les Miserables' as anti-Immigration and Customs Enforcement protests continued in Los Angeles."
California Gov. Gavin Newsom tweeted, "Someone explain the plot to him."
The Democratic Group Blue Georgia wrote, "Les Misérables is a story of social unrest, especially the June Rebellion, where young idealists rise up against inequality and government oppression. Young people fight for justice, calling for reforms and dignity for the poor. The government responds to the rebellion with heavy force, resulting in bloodshed. Sound familiar?"
In a separate tweet, Blue Georgia quoted CNN's Abby Phillip and posted, "Abby Phillip: 'Les Mis is about is about a prisoner on parole who tears up his papers to try to live as a good citizen. He then gets caught up in a revolution against the government.' Did they tell Trump what it was about?"
