'Cruelty is the point': Trump’s Capitol Hill rant panned as MAGA warns 'Johnson hasn’t done his job'

President Donald Trump is still pushing for an expansive "big, beautiful bill" that will combine his legislative priorities, but the bill remains stalled in Congress as GOP lawmakers fight over the particulars. House Republicans have strong disagreements over proposed Medicaid cuts, and some Senate Republicans — including Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wisconsin) — believe that trying to pass an expansive megabill is unrealistic, and that Republicans would be better off passing a series of smaller bills.
Trump, hoping to move the bill along, visited Capitol Hill on Tuesday morning, May 20. With House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) at this side, Trump dismissed reports that Republicans remain divided over the bill.
Trump told reporters, "We have a tremendously unified party. I don’t think we’ve ever had a party like this. There are some people who want a couple of things that maybe I don’t like or that they’re not going to get…. And we’re going to have a bill, the one big, beautiful bill. I think it’s going to be — it's the biggest bill ever passed, and we've got to get it done."

During his rant, Trump talked about everyone from former President Joe Biden (who is battling metastatic prostate cancer) to Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Kentucky), attacking him as a "grandstander."
MSNBC's reporters offered some analysis of Trump's visit to Capitol Hill.
MSNBC's Gabe Gutierrez told host Ana Cabrera, "The president is trying to show a unified front for the Republican Party." And their colleague Ryan Nobles stressed that "Trump was very clear with the holdouts on both sides" that "they need to get it passed."
Nobles pointed out that the bill can pass in the House "without a single Democratic vote" and "could change very dramatically" in the U.S. Senate.

Trump's visit to Capitol Hill is also receiving a lot of reactions on X, formerly Twitter.
Spectrum News' Taylor Popielarz noted that Trump was getting ready to "meet with House Republicans," adding, "He wants them to pass the reconciliation package he calls 'one big beautiful bill' before the week ends."
Popielarz also observed, "President Trump rarely comes to Capitol Hill, so this visit is notable."
CNN's Kit Maher tweeted, "Trump on Capitol Hill: 'I don't think @RepThomasMassie understands government. I think he's a grandstander.... I think he should be voted out of office. If you ask him a couple of questions he never gives you an answer, he just says, 'I'm a no.'"
The X account for Steve Bannon's "War Room" podcast posted, "President Trump has gone up to Capitol Hill because Speaker Johnson hasn't done his job."
Fox News' Chad Pergram wrote, "Trump tells House GOPers in closed door meeting 'don’t f--- around with Medicaid.'"
Progressive Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-Massachusetts) commented, "Trump is on Capitol Hill today to lobby for his Big, Ugly Bill that would: — Kick 14 million people off healthcare — Rip food away from millions of kids, elders, & veterans — Give billionaires like Elon Musk even more tax breaks — & more. The cruelty is the point."
