‘Morning Joe’ host Joe Scarborough spoke through laughter as he described President Donald Trump’s Thursday attempt to “renew pressure on [Fed] chairman Jerome Powell” to retire. Trump arrived to tour renovations at the Federal Reserve’s headquarters but ultimately got fact-checked by Powell in front of reporters.

“So, we're taking a look and it looks like it's about $3.1 billion,” Trump said of renovations costs. “It went up a little bit, or a lot, so the $2.7 [billion] is now 3.1 [billion]."

Powell shook his head before turning and telling Trump: “I'm not aware of that. I haven't heard that from anybody.”

“Yeah, it just came out,” Trump said, reaching into a pocket for a list.

“I noticed that at about $3.1 [billion] as well,” inserted Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.), who attended Trump on his tour.

“This came from us?” Powell asked, scanning Trump’s document.

“Yes," Trump replied.

“Are you including the Martin [Building] renovation?” Powell asked. “You just added in a third building, is what that is. That's a third building.”

“But it's a building that's being built,” Trump pointed out.

“No, it's been built. It was built five years ago,” Powell said. “We finished Martin five years ago.”

“—as part of the overall work,” Trump insisted.

“No, it's not new.” Powell said.

“Look at Powell’s face here,” Scarborough said through chuckles while holding up a copy of the Wall Street Journal reporting the event. “[He looks] absolutely confused, because those [numbers] are from the previous administration. It was five years ago.”

“Not great staffing work for the president,” Scarborough said, and then ribbed a news anchor for skipping the scene’s prize moment in his rundown of events.

“Hold on, man. You missed the best part!” Scarborough said. “The best part was Donald Trump was given the wrong numbers by his staff, which says it's three $3.1 billion. It's inflated. And Powell says ‘no it's not. It's $2.5 billion’ — and then Tim Scott goes: ‘Those are the numbers I have, too, Mr. President.’"

“Put this one next to Mike Pence reaching down and putting the water on the floor after the president does it in the first term,” Scarborough said. “This is Hall of Fame here. This is Hall of Fame by Tim Scott. ‘No, those are my numbers too.’”
