President Donald Trump is urging the appointment of a special prosecutor to look into discredited allegations of fraud in the 2020 presidential election.

In a statement posted Friday on his social platform Truth Social, Trump repeated baseless assertions about election misconduct and took a swipe at President Joe Biden’s immigration policies.

Trump once again promoted the false narrative that he was the rightful winner of the 2020 presidential race, insisting it was stolen through widespread fraud.

“A Special Prosecutor must be appointed,” he wrote. “This cannot be allowed to happen again in the United States of America! Let the work begin!”

The president's statement generated backlash on social media.

"Now Trump is calling for a special prosecutor to investigate the 2020 election Watch as they make false allegations and rewrite history right in front of our faces AND NOT ONE PERSON IN POWER WILL DO A DAMNED THING ABOUT IT. Just like he changed the narratives for 2016 and 1/6," wrote former Democratic candidate for Senate, Rick Taylor, on the social platform X.

Philip Germain, an election data analyst, wrote: "Trump demands a '2020 Election Special Prosecutor' be appointed to investigate Democrats. He, once again, forgets that he was the sitting President."

Reporter Taylor Popiealarz wrote: "President Trump is now calling for a special prosecutor to be appointed to investigate the 2020 election. Just like it's accurate to say President Trump won the 2024 election by over 2 million votes in a race that was free and fair, it's accurate to say he lost the 2020 election by over 7 million votes in a race that was free and fair."

"But the president continues to insist, despite no evidence surfacing, that the 2020 election was rigged and stolen. His own Attorney General in 2020 and multiple Trump-appointed judges found no evidence to support claims of widespread fraud," Popiealarz added.

"A Special Prosecutor? Sure. Right after we appoint a unicorn to audit Santa’s naughty list. Trump’s been shouting 'FRAUD!' longer than he’s paid taxes – which is saying something. At this point, the only overwhelming evidence is of a man who lost, couldn’t handle it, and now rants like a possessed fax machine trapped in 2020," wrote a user on X.
