MSNBC's The Weekend co-hosts, former Republican National Committee Chair Michael Steele, and Symone Sanders-Townsend, on Sunday issued a scathing rebuke of the media's coverage of Vice President Kamala Harris versus Donald Trump.

"Coverage for the vice president merits what it has been since she has been in public office on the world stage since the first day she joined the ticket with all of the stories. Donald Trump is not covered the same," Sanders-Townsend said.

"The media apparatus at large — we are failing if we do not give a rigorous look at Donald Trump, and when he is wrong, say he is wrong, and when he is lying, say he is lying," she emphasized. She also noted that when President Joe Biden took a "sip of Gatorade" during a Juneteenth event earlier this year, social media users and Fox News pundits said, 'the president doesn't seem well."

Donald Trump, on the other hand, the co-host emphasized, "seems unwell, and that is a very fair, factual statement to make."

Steele added, "It's obvious on so many levels, but the thing about it that strikes me, and it's going to be manifest on Tuesday, in how even in the run-up to this debate, the expectation is somehow — she's got to perform better, she's got to prove something. No! The guy who's talking cray-cray has to prove something. Because this is going to be a different debate for him than what he had with Joe Biden and Hillary Clinton. Because a whole lot of stuff has happened to that man since those last debates. And that is part of the conversation, but somehow that is not part of the coverage."

The former RNC hair noted that he'd had some conversations about this topic with a few reporters, and they suggested reporting that actively veers away from criticizing Harris is "not entertaining enough," and, "you don't get enough clicks from it."

Steele emphasized, "Folks, this is about our country, this is not about being entertained."
