NYT’s Maggie Haberman: Why Trump really criticized Detroit while in Detroit

The New York Times' Maggie Haberman offered a potential reason for why Donald Trump insulted the city of Detroit, Michigan, during his appearance at the Detroit Economic Club Thursday.
"You wanna know the truth? The whole country's gonna be like Detroit," if Harris wins the White House, Trump said. "Our whole country will end up being like Detroit if she's your president. We're a developing nation too. Just take a look at Detroit. Detroit's a developing area, in a hell of a lot more places than China."
Haberman joined CNN's Anderson Cooper on Thursday night to discuss Trump's remarks.

Cooper noted, "Some people might look at that and say, 'Why would he trash the city he's speaking in? Is that a calculation because he thinks he's not particularly popular in Detroit itself, but is appealing to others in Michigan and elsewhere?"
Haberman replied, "I think he was appealing to the people in that room, who were a group largely of white businessmen, as I understand. You could hear there was applause when he said the line that — to your point — this is going to appear in local news outside that room. And insulting the city that you're in, especially one with a large number of Black voters, is not usually a prescription that gets made for candidates. We'll see if it matters to him. He's been saying things like this for a very long time.
