During a Tuesday evening appearance on Fox News' The Ingraham Angle, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) projected confidence in Republican prospects ahead of the midterm elections, while warning of possible political chaos if Democrats regain control of the House.
Johnson said, “We’re going to win the midterms. We’re going to have a big victory,” and added, “We have to give President Trump four years instead of two. Imagine if Democrats took over the House, they’d impeach him.”
Johnson’s remarks were mocked by his critics.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) reacted to his comment and wrote on the social platform X: “Translation: ‘We’re desperately trying to rig the midterms. Our policies are so unpopular, it’s our only option left.’”
Podcaster Keith Olbermann wrote: “Then, @SpeakerJohnson's terrible terrible secret whatever the eff it is would be made public. We know this about it: it's terrible terrible terrible terrible terrible terrible terrible terrible terrible.”
“Don’t threaten us with a good time,” wrote a user.
“Yeah, because nothing says ‘confidence in your guy’ like openly admitting the only thing stopping impeachment is holding the gavel,” wrote another.
Meanwhile, the Senate failed to pass a Republican-led stopgap funding bill Tuesday.
The legislation, intended to keep the government open for seven weeks, lacked sufficient Democratic support and fell short of the 60 votes required to overcome a filibuster.
With no new agreement in hand and the deadline approaching, federal agencies have been ordered to activate their contingency plans in anticipation of a funding lapse.
The government is on track to shut down shortly after midnight (i.e. early Wednesday) unless a last‑minute deal is hammered out.
