'His staff must hate him': GOP strategist slams Trump’s 'insane' home stretch strategy

Earlier this year, veteran GOP strategist/consultant Stuart Stevens predicted that the final weeks of the 2024 presidential election would see a major polling surge in favor of Democratic nominee Kamala Harris that would recall Ronald Reagan's polling surge of October 1980.
But with Election Night less than a week away, national and battleground state polls are still showing an incredibly tight race that many pollsters consider a toss-up. Stevens, however, remains optimistic about Harris' prospects.
During a Thursday morning, October 31 appearance on MSNBC, the Never Trump conservative — whose clients, over the years, have included now-Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) and the late Sen. John McCain (R-Arizona) — argued that the vice president is running a very disciplined campaign, while former President Donald Trump's is "erratic."

Stevens told MSNBC host José Díaz-Balart and fellow panelists who included former Rep. Val Demings (D-Florida) and the Dispatch's David M. Drucker: "I've always felt that the higher the stakes were in this election, the better the vice president would do. So, I think they've done a great job…. I think I'd much rather be the Harris campaign going into this final stretch."
Stevens argued that Trump is making some moves that defy logic — for example, visiting New Mexico when the state will likely go to Harris.
Stevens commented, "I think the technical term for Donald Trump campaigning in New Mexico is: it's insane. It's just a vanity act that he's in…. Sometimes, you look at Donald Trump and you go, 'Their staff must hate him. Why are they doing these things to him?'"
Harris' campaign, Stevens argued, is showing "composure," while Trump's is "very erratic and responsive."
