'No defenses left': Why Kenneth Chesebro plea deal likely has Trump 'quaking in his boots'

Sidney Powell and Kenneth Chesebro would have been the first co-defendants to go to trial in Fulton County, Georgia District Attorney Fani Willis' election interference case against former President Donald Trump. But as it turns out, Powell and Chesebro won't be going to trial.
The former Trump attorneys have agreed to plea deals with Willis' office. In exchange for receiving probation instead of prison sentences, Powell and Chesebro must give prosecutors their total cooperation.
In her October 23 column, the Washington Post's Jennifer Rubin lays out some reasons why it made sense for Chesebro to accept a plea deal — and why his decision to flip should have Trump "quaking in his boots."
POLL: Should Trump be allowed to hold office again?
"Lawyer Kenneth Chesebro peppered now four-time-indicted former President Donald Trump with written advice as to how he might overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election, knowing that no court had found evidence of fraud and that no state had withdrawn its delegates for Joe Biden," Rubin explains. "On Friday, after previously rejecting a deal, Chesebro pleaded guilty to one felony for conspiracy to submit a false document…. What became of Chesebro's arrogant insistence he could not be prosecuted for giving 'legal advice?'"
Rubin continues, "Simply put, Chesebro lost critical pre-trial motions that made this defense practically impossible."
Chesebro, Rubin emphasizes, accepted a plea deal because he had "no defenses left."
According to attorney Norm Eisen, Chesebro's decision to flip is terrible news for Trump.

Eisen told Rubin, "Trump's illegitimate assault on the outcome of the 2020 election stood on two legs: the factual assertion that he had actually won and the legal claim that he had the right to use false electoral certificates to have Vice President Pence change the outcome in Congress on January 6. With the guilty plea of Sidney Powell, the first (former lawyer) was knocked out from under the former president. Now, with the guilty plea of Kenneth Chesebro, the second has also fallen away…. Trump is toast."
