Scottish newspaper: 'Ridiculous' Trump’s visit isn’t a 'cause for much celebration'

On Monday, May 1, Donald Trump arrived at Aberdeen Airport for a visit to Scotland. The former U.S. president has a long-time connection to that country; his mother, the late Mary Anne MacLeod Trump, was a Scottish immigrant, and he owns golf courses there.

But not everyone in Scotland welcomed his visit — a fact that The Scotsman's editorial board makes clear in a biting editorial published on May 2.

"Clearly, in normal circumstances, the arrival of a former American leader would have been cause for much celebration," The Scotman's editorial board argues. "However, given Trump's attempts to overturn the presidential election result and his supporters' storming of the U.S. Capitol in a shocking attack on democracy, one wonders just who did arrange for the red carpet and two pipers that greeted him on arrival. Of course, it would be completely ridiculous to imagine that Trump would set up such a welcome for himself, but then again, he is more than a little ridiculous."

The publication recommended that Scots give Trump's visit a "chilly" response and noted the "array of legal troubles" he is facing in the United States.

"Trump has denied falsifying business records in an ongoing criminal case, while yesterday, former Elle Magazine advice columnist E. Jean Carroll was giving evidence in a New York court, where she is suing him for defamation after he called her allegation that he raped her in the mid-1990s 'a hoax and a lie,'" The Scotsman's editorial board observes.
