'They have laid out nothing': Ex-RNC chair predicts 'political BS' from Republicans after debate

MSNBC's The Weekend co-hosts dug into House Republicans on Sunday over their commitment to attempting to "embarrass House Democrats" instead of actually getting anything done for their constituents.
"Congress is back in session tomorrow," co-host Alicia Menendez began, "so how is the Republican-led House prioritizing their week? By launching an anti-President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris offensive. They have hearings planned to target the administration on crime, the economy, and the border — worth noting that border crossings are at a four-year low."
She continued, "Texas Republican Congressman Tony Gonzales is predicting his party will lose control of the House saying, 'We are going to lose it because of ourselves.'"

Former Republican National Committee chair and The Weekend co-host Michael Steele chimed in, saying, "True words, and I appreciate the congressman being honest about that. I've been saying for over a year they're gonna lose the House...because in terms of the substance of issues that House members want to run on in their districts. And believe it or not, folks, a lot of House members, that's what they want to do."
Referencing a report by the Texas Tribune's Jasper Scherer, Melendez noted:
Most people, Gonzales said, 'just want their lives to be better. They want to feel safe in their communities. They want their kids to feel safe in school. They want more money in their pockets. These are real issues. … Yet the House Republicans continue to get in their own way, and I worry if we stay in this spot, we’re gonna be in the minority.'
Steele then emphasized, "They have laid out nothing on all of those points, and someone like Congressman Gonzalez is saying, 'When I go to a town hall, what will I say when I get the incoming from constituents who are talking about the economy?" Steele added, "Republicans don't have an answer. They want to investigate Joe Biden for impeachment, instead of laying out a profound governing strategy to put up against what Kamala Harris will be spelling out to the country on Tuesday night."

Co-host Symone Sanders-Townsend added, "Elect people who will do their jobs. These Republicans in Congress have not done their jobs. They're not working for you." She then pointed out the fact House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) on Friday "unveiled a stopgap funding bill tied to a proposal that would require proof of citizenship in order to vote in federal elections," which top Senate Democrats say is an example of Republicans "wasting precious time catering to the hard MAGA right."
Steele then predicted how House Republicans will likely respond on Wednesday following Tuesday night's debate between Harris and former President Donald Trump.
"Let's be very clear: It is against the law if you are not a citizen of the United States to vote in any election, period. So what the Republicans are doing is just political BS, and it is to try to embarrass Kamala Harris, House Democrats. They think that's how they keep the House, but the law's already very clearly stated, and well known, that if you're not a citizen, you cannot vote. So all of what you're about to hear from Republicans on Wednesday, is political BS.
