'Trump is not a member' of Congress: Top Dem says party won’t help GOP pass sweeping bill

Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-MS) on Sunday was certain that his party will not help Republicans as the conservative lawmakers attempt to a huge reconciliation bill that would include Donald Trump's top priorities — border security, energy, and tax cuts.

While House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) said on Saturday that the president-elect is in favor of the legislation, Thompson made clear during an interview with MSNBC's The Weekend that "Donald Trump is not a member" of Congress.

"Do you think Republicans in the House have enough votes for a single reconciliation bill," The Weekend co-host Alicia Menendez asked the Mississippi lawmaker, who was awarded a Presidential Citizens Medal this week for his work on the January 6 Committee.

"If they don't, do Democrats come to their rescue?" Menendez asked.

"Democrats will not come to the Republicans' rescue," Thompson replied. "As I indicated, Donald Trump is not a member of a House of Representatives. We have to make sure that people understand that. It's a deliberative process of those individuals who have been elected to represent their constituents. And so we'll see how it goes."

The Democratic leader continued, "He can express an opinion, but that opinion is just like millions of other Americans. We take it into consideration, but it has no binding impact on the House. So, we look forward to a lively debate. I'm convinced that when a president overreaches into the House, like he's doing already, it won't last long. And the split that's there will continue. It will get wider. But more importantly, Democrats are united. We will show Republicans how you count the electoral college votes on January 6th. We won't be all over the place."
