On May 25, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) announced that Oath Keepers leader/founder Stewart Rhodes had been sentenced to 18 years in federal prison for seditious conspiracy and other charges. And Kelly Meggs, leader of the far-right militia group's Florida chapter, was sentenced to 12 years.

The charges stemmed from their efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election results. Despite those sentences, the Oath Keepers are still active — and still falsely claim the election was stolen from former President Donald Trump.

In an article published on September 29, The Guardian's Jason Wilson reports that for almost a year after the January 6, 2021 insurrection, dues payments for Oath Keepers membership were still — according to Venmo records — being sent to the group's then-vice president.

POLL: Should Trump be allowed to hold office again?

"Those who made payments to an Oath Keepers leader on Venmo include an engineer whose employer provides satellite technology to U.S. government agencies, including the Department of Defense (DoD) and the Department of Homeland Security; a former Department of Homeland Security employee whose tenure at the agency overlapped with his membership in the group, and a 2022 candidate for the Wyoming State Senate," Wilson reports. "Others connected on Venmo to Rhodes or other organizational leaders include a U.S. Navy recruiting officer."

The payments, Wilson notes, "were recorded on the profile of Jason Ottersberg, a Cheyenne, Wyoming, man who has been publicly identified as a senior leader in the Oath Keepers."
