'Pretty disgusted': These Haley voters refuse to join her in supporting 'disaster' Trump
Election 2024

During the final weeks of her presidential campaign, former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley intensified her attacks on Donald Trump. Many anti-Trump conservatives were drawn to her campaign, but eventually — after Trump became the official GOP nominee — Haley endorsed him. And she continued to express her support as one of the speakers at the 2024 Republican National Convention in Milwaukee.

But in an article published on September 30, Politico reporters Meridith McGraw, Lisa Kashinsky and Natalie Allison stress that not all of Haley's GOP primary voters have joined her in supporting Trump.

"Former state campaign chairs for Haley's now-defunct presidential bid are increasingly coming out against the former president, including Utah Lt. Gov. Deidre Henderson, who declined Monday to endorse Donald Trump," the journalists explain. "And in several other cases, they are endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris over Trump, including in Iowa and Michigan. Meanwhile, some Haley supporters organizing for Harris hope to raise millions to spend on ads to reach the former U.N. ambassador's backers. And others are involved in more informal efforts to convince fellow disaffected Republicans to vote blue."

Former Rep. David Emery (R-Maine), now 76, is among the longtime Republicans who has endorsed Democratic nominee Harris over Trump.

Emery told Politico, "Most of us are pretty disgusted with Trump and think he would be a disaster. And if you really believe that, then you can't sit on the sidelines."

A former Haley campaign official, interviewed on condition of anonymity, told Politico that "political tribal instincts kick in when you get down to the wire" but acknowledged, "That's not everyone.”

Haley has threatened legal action against the group Haley Voters for Harris, demanding that they quit using her name. But so far, they have refused to do so.

Robert Schwartz of Haley Voters for Harris is highly critical of not only Trump, but also, of his far-right running mate: Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio).

Schwartz told Politico, "Trump has basically said he doesn't want anything to do with Haley voters. JD Vance was a horrible choice. He's like a slap in the face to Haley voters, when Marco Rubio or Doug Burgum, Glenn Youngkin — any of them would have been someone who really rallied Haley voters."
