'Evil is being defeated': MTG heralds 'major shifts in global leadership' after Pope Francis death

Shortly after Pope Francis's death on Monday morning, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) took to the social platform X and wrote, "Major changes in global leadership have occurred today. The hand of God is prevailing over evil."
Although Greene did not name the Pope, many reacted to the post asking her if she was celebrating his death.
"You are bragging about the death of the Pope?!?" wrote Armand Domalewski, a data analyst.

Writer David Dault said, "Congressperson Greene seems to be both an Anti-Catholic bigot and a coward. If you didn’t like the Pope, that’s fine. But say it with your full voice. Don’t mince your words."
Activist Chase Oliver, the Libertarian Party's 2024 presidential nominee, said, "Disgusted by this Catholics should be rightfully outraged."
Greene has faced considerable backlash for her comments regarding the Catholic Church, especially for alleging that it is operated by "Satan" and endorsing policies she considers detrimental, like assisting undocumented immigrants.
During a 2022 interview, she said the Church’s charitable efforts to support migrants represented "Satan controlling the church." Her remarks led to strong reactions from Catholic authorities and groups.

The Catholic League, along with others, criticized Greene's remarks as anti-Catholic and inflammatory. Despite the blowback, Greene said her comments were a defense of Christian principles and a rejection of what she perceives as political activism in religious organizations.
"The Catholic League's Bill Donohue accused me of slandering Catholics and Catholicism in an interview I gave to Michael Voris at Church Militant," she said at the time. "Nothing could be further from the truth, and he must apologize promptly and publicly for these words."
