Testimony from top Michigan Republicans links fake electors scheme to Trump reelection campaign

In seven different states that Joe Biden won in the 2020 presidential election, MAGA Republicans hoping to keep Donald Trump in the White House circulated bogus certificates declaring Trump as the winner. One of those states was Michigan, where Democratic State Attorney General Dana Nessel has been aggressively going after Trump supporters she says were major players in the fake electors scheme in her state.
The Detroit News' Craig Mauger reports that on Thursday, December 14, "top Michigan Republicans" who testified in court linked the organization and execution of a false certificate saying Donald Trump won the state's 2020 presidential election directly to Trump's campaign."
"While the Trump campaign has previously been tied to the overall strategy of crafting electoral certificates in seven battleground states," Mauger explains, "the testimony Thursday described campaign staffers as being involved in recruiting attendees and running the meeting of the false electors in Lansing on December 14, 2020. During that gathering, 16 Republican activists signed a document that was used to claim the then-incumbent Republican president won Michigan's 16 electoral votes."

One of the witnesses who testified, according to Mauger, was former Michigan Republican Party Communications Director Tony Zammit.
According to Zammit's testimony, Shawn Flynn (an attorney for Trump's 2020 campaign in Michigan) gaveled in that December 14, 2020 meeting.
Mauger reports, "Zammit's remarks could be key because prosecutors must eventually prove the Republicans who signed the false electoral certificate had an 'intent to defraud,' a standard that could be more difficult to reach if lawyers working for Trump were indeed directing the Michigan Republicans to take the actions they did or if the Republican activists didn't understand what they were signing…. Zammit also testified that Flynn had been directed to submit the false certificate to the federal government."
Former Michigan Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land testified as well.

According to Mauger, Land "said because the Board of State Canvassers determined Democrat Joe Biden won Michigan's election, she didn't understand why the GOP electors were meeting — and no one detailed to her why the event was necessary."
Land testified, "I didn't have the information to make a decision."
