'Baseless conspiracy theories': Trump allies accuse Dems of plotting 'horrific July 13 shooting'

The July 13 assassination attempt that Donald Trump survived at a rally in Western Pennsylvania is the subject of three federal investigations. Officials, both Democrats and Republicans, have been demanding answers — and wanting to know why the shooter, Thomas Matthew Crooks, was able to get as close to rally as he did.
In an article published on July 30, Mother Jones' Mark Follman examines some of the conspiracy theories that Trump's allies have been promoting since the attack.
"Conspiracy theories from both the political right and left have run rampant since the horrific shooting on July 13," Follman explains. "But while some Democratic voters have baselessly speculated that the violence was somehow staged to benefit Trump, few if any, leaders on the left have gone there."

Follman notes that Rep. Ryan Zinke (R-Montana), who served as secretary of the interior under Trump, "suggested on Fox News on Monday, (July 29), that the security failure may have resulted from some sort of government plot."
The Mother Jones reporter also points out that "numerous high-profile Trump allies" have been "accusing Democrats — without any evidence — of orchestrating the shooting."
"They included Congress members Marjorie Taylor Greene and Mike Collins of Georgia, and Trump's sons Donald Jr. and Eric," Follman explains. "(Fox News' Maria) Bartiromo also played host to Eric Trump when he claimed that Democrats 'would stop at absolutely nothing' and had intended to have his father murdered: 'I've said on this show before I wouldn't be surprised if they tried something even worse, alluding to exactly what happened, and I was right."
