'Shame, shame!' GOP lawmaker bombarded with jeers at raucous town hall

Although Rep. Mike Lawler (R-New York) considers himself a Donald Trump supporter, he isn't known for being bombastic or ultra-MAGA. Lawler is widely regarded as a moderate conservative in a swing district, and he isn't shy about appearing on liberal-leaning MSNBC.

Lawler's allies are quite bullish on his ability to go the distance if he runs for governor of New York State and goes up against Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul in 2026.

But during a town hall event in Somers, New York on Sunday night, May 4, Lawler encountered a lot of angry voters who were unhappy over President Trump's policies —including tariffs and mass layoffs of federal government workers.

Trying to thread the needle and explain why he is still a Trump supporter, Lawler told attendees, "Folks, tariffs are way more complicated than you want to make them."

Lawler grew frustrated when attendees were chanting, "Shame, shame!" and told them, "Folks, enough!"

When one of the attendees, social worker Emily Feiner, others began chanting, "Let her stay! Let her stay!"

Another attendee accused the Trump Administration of being hypocritical about antisemitism, saying, "You don’t call out the right-wing antisemitism, you call out pretend left-wing antisemitism."
