GOP shouldn't be 'shocked' their 'base is recoiling' from DOGE’s mass layoffs: Ex-RNC chair
Push Notification

GOP lawmakers in Georgia and Wisconsin were taken aback when, at recent town hall events, they encountered attendees who were angry over the mass layoffs of federal workers being pushed by the Trump administration and the Elon Musk-led "Department of Government Efficiency," or DOGE (which is not yet an official federal agency authorized by Congress).

During a Monday afternoon, February 24 panel discussion on MSNBC, former Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairman Michael Steele stressed that federal government workers in GOP-leaning congressional districts didn't think they would be affected the layoffs — but are now getting a rude awakening.

Republican members of Congress, according to Steele, are getting booed at town halls because of their unwillingness to stand up to the South African centibillionaire.

Steele told MSNBC host Katy Tur, "It's called Project 2025; they signed off on it. They lied to the American people about it. You don't hear members of Congress standing up rebuking Elon Musk, which would be easy to do because he's an unelected individual who is, you know, taking a chainsaw to the federal government."

The Never-Trump conservative and former RNC chairman continued: "So, you would think that since they have control in charge of the federal government, that they would be somewhat put out by it. But they're not, and the reason they're not is that they are in alignment with what Trump wants to do, because that is the safest harbor that they can park themselves…. They're just now having the town hall meetings, and reluctantly so."

Steele argued that GOP lawmakers were naïve if they thought their voters would be spared the draconian job cuts coming from the Trump Administration and DOGE.

Steele told Tur, "The results that they're beginning to hear and see and experience is sending a shockwave, which I don't know why they're shocked. But they are that the base is recoiling from all of this. Why? Because it's now hitting them…. (They thought that) because I got this great new promotion in the department of X, that I'm going to be safe because I'm a Trump person. Well, no, you're not. You're expendable because you're a federal employee. And when they want to cleave 2 million federal employees from the rolls, where do you think that's going to come from? So, this is the new reality that's starting to set in."
