After House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-Minnesota) won the speaker nomination Tuesday, several hard-right GOP members, including ex-President Donald Trump — who called Emmer a "globalist RINO (Republican in name only)" — spoke out against the chosen Republican.

United States Representative Jim Banks (R-Indiana) was one of the GOP House members who shared his reason for not backing the Majority Whip with CNN's Manu Raju on Capitol Hill following the nomination.

"Emmer is too moderate for the speakership and there's not enough support in the room behind me for him to be elected speaker," Raju said.

The Minnesota congressman's political stance is in stark contrast — in the eyes of conservative lawmakers — to Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), who ran for speaker and lost the nomination three times last week.

"I'm a conservative," Banks told Raju. "I came to Washington to fight for conservative values. I can't go along with putting one of the most moderate Republicans in the conference behind the speaker's chair. That betrays the values I came here to fight for. I hope there's a change along the way. He doesn't have the support in the room. Dozens of members won't vote for him at this point. It's been a heated discussion for members at the microphone. We'll see where we go from here."
