These MAGA Republicans want to 'draft' Trump for House speaker

On Tuesday, October 3, 2023, Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-California) became the first House speaker in U.S. history be ousted from his position. Far-right Rep. Matt Gaetz's (R-Florida) "motion to vacate" came up for a full House vote, and all House Democrats joined eight Republicans in voting to oust McCarthy.
The U.S. House of Representatives is now without a speaker, and some MAGA Republicans are floating an idea: nominate former President Donald Trump for the position.
Chaya Tong and Brett Bachman of the Daily Beast report that the far-right Republicans who are promoting this idea include "Infowars" conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, "War Room" host Steve Bannon and some of the pundits at Newsmax. On Fox News, host Sean Hannity told viewers that according to his sources, Trump might be open to being "drafted" as a short-term House speaker.
POLL: Should Trump be allowed to hold office again?
Jones told "Infowars" viewers, "Donald Trump should be nominated as a litmus test to all these Republicans. With all the fake charges and all the fake trials, how awesome would it be to make Donald Trump speaker of the House?"
Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), meanwhile, wouldn't rule out the possibility when he appeared on Hannity's show after McCarthy was ousted but didn't seem terribly enthusiastic about it either.
Jordan told Hannity, "I want him to be the next president of the United States, but if he wants to be speaker, that's fine too."
