Maine Gov. Janet Mills on Monday refused to answer questions from reporters about whether police were aware of Robert Card’s mental health status and access to guns before he carried out last week’s mass shooting in Lewiston, Maine.

Eighteen people were killed last Wednesday when Card opened fire at a bar and grill, and separately at a bowling alley. Card was found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound following a 2-day manhunt.

CNN on Monday reported that “officers from the Sagadahoc County and Kennebec County Sheriff’s Offices responded and tried to contact Robert Card on September 16, less than six weeks before last Wednesday’s massacres in a bowling alley and a bar.”

“The responding officer learned later in a letter from the Army that a soldier ‘is concerned that [Card] is going to snap and commit a mass shooting,’ according to the report filed in connection with the wellness check,” CNN reports.

Asked about her reaction to the report on Monday, Mills declined to answer questions from reporters, insisting the matter is “under investigation.”

"Governor, you really don't know what we're talking about?” CNN’s Shimon Prokupecz asked. “Is that what you're telling us? Everyone wants to know the answer.”

“It's under investigation,” Mills said.

“It is, but — no, this is something you should — we know that there is an alarming concern from the law enforcement community that activity and information here was ignored,” Prokupecz continued. “And the simple answer is why was that done and are you concerned about that?”

“The facts are being determined. You're making assumptions, I’m not willing to make the assumptions.” Mills replied.

Discussing the governor’s lack of response, Prokupecz said, “this has been something that [the authorities] have not wanted to answer for days now.”
