'Rapidly evolving environment': Harris meeting with top donors 'on short notice'
Election 2024

With more and more Democrats urging President Joe Biden to drop out of the 2024 presidential race — including, reportedly, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-California) and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-New York) in private conversations — the burning question becomes: Who will be the new nominee?

Some Democrats are touting Vice President Kamala Harris as the obvious choice. But whether the party would go with Harris or someone else should Biden exit the race remains to be seen.

According to New York Times sources, Harris will, on short notice, be addressing major Democratic donors during a Friday afternoon phone conversation.

Times reporter Theodore Schleifer explains, "The call is endorsed in part by Reid Hoffman, one of the Democratic Party's biggest givers, who on Friday morning, encouraged his Silicon Valley network to join the meeting."

Hoffman, the billionaire co-founder of LinkedIn, is a prominent figure in the tech world — and a major Democratic donor.

In an e-mail, Schleifer reports, Hoffman told fellow Democrats, "We continue to find ourselves in a rapidly evolving environment…. With the stakes as high as they are this cycle, we have to remain focused on the critical work that needs to be done to protect our democracy."

Schleifer notes that the Friday call "is expected to be with major Democratic donors from a variety of industries, not only those in Mr. Hoffman's network."
