'Took my breath away': Experts stunned by Harris’ latest proposal

Experts are hopeful after Vice President Kamala Harris on Tuesday's episode of ABC's "The View" revealed her plan to expand Medicare to cover in-home care costs for seniors.
"I took care of my mother when she was sick. She was diagnosed with cancer," Harris said. "There are so many people in our country who are right in the middle. They take care of their kids and they're taking care of their aging parents, and it's just almost impossible to do it all."
Reuters noted that the 2024 Democratic nominee's "policy would expand Medicare, the federal insurance plan for elderly and disabled people, to cover long-term care for seniors at home for the first time, including services like in-home health aides, in hopes of saving American families the often high cost of nursing homes for aging family members."

Several experts responded with positive feedback to the announcement via social media.
University of Wisconsin-Madison geographer and political ecologist Morgan Robertson wrote via the social media platform Blusky: "This literally took my breath away. Do you KNOW how big a deal this is? Aging-in-place, at home, is the BEST way to care for a senior with dementia. But can I tell you how much it cost to hire care for my mother at home, even sh—ty care in a low-cost market (Eastern Iowa)? $14,000 A MONTH."
Historian Robert Reich commented: "Harris' Medicare proposal, which requires Congressional action, would provide much needed relief and financial support to the 37 million people in the US who currently provide some form of unpaid eldercare. It could be a game changer."
US Rep. Ayanna Presley (D-MA) added: "That’s right @KamalaHarris. Caregiving is a labor of love but as a nation we can and must do so much more to support caregivers. With you as our President, we'll build a more just America that cares for its people."
The nonprofit social welfare organization Moms Rising wrote: "We assume Medicare covers long-term care already, until we realize it does not! So many moms in the sandwich generation struggle to afford care for our aging & disabled loved ones on top of child care, and it's such a relief to know that."

LA Times columnist Anita Chabria emphasized: "This is the most powerful policy proposal Harris has made -- and is absolutely going to resonate with older women regardless of political party. Elder care, like childcare, is largely a woman's issue whether we want to admit it or not."
