As former President Donald Trump's legal battles persist, his lawyers and United States Department of Justice special counsel Jack Smith's prosecution team are facing off this week over an issue regarding important records in the 2024 MAGA hopeful's Mar-a-Lago classified documents criminal case, according to The Messenger.

The trial over Smith's indictment against Trump that alleges the ex-president "endangered the United States' national security by storing classified government documents" at his Florida estate — which "should have remained in Washington, D.C. when Trump's presidency ended," is set to begin May 20, 2024.

Per The Messenger, "In a court filing late Sunday night, Trump's attorneys said Smith's office had not yet made about 2,400 pages of classified discovery material available for review in the Southern District of Florida," although over "1.3 million pages of unclassified records have been provided by prosecutors to the defense in the case."

POLL: Should Trump be allowed to hold office again?

On Tuesday, according to the news outlet, in response to the ex-president's legal team, prosecutors contend that Smith's team "'has fully complied with its unclassified discovery obligations' and partially objected to the extension request by Trump's attorneys."

However, The Messenger notes, the Trump attorneys are asking United States District Judge Aileen Cannon for a 10-day extension "to file motions seeking to compel discovery beyond the current deadline of Friday."

According to the report, "Cannon on Tuesday issued an order favorable to the defense's arguments."
