Minutes before President Joe Biden took the podium to address the nation Thursday night, US Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) was one of the many attendees who greeted the president as he entered the chamber.

During their coverage of the 2024 State of the Union address, MSNBC hosts Rachel Maddow, Joy Reid, and former US senator Claire McCaskill pointed out that the Georgia lawmaker had not yet been called out for wearing a Make America Great Again hat in the room, despite the fact hats are not allowed.

"Claire, I just have to ask you about the hat. Isn't there a rule?" Maddow asked.

The former senator replied, "I'm really surprised that she is not being asked to remove that hat. It makes me think that Speaker Johnson is really afraid of her."

She continued, "Because there is a rule. There's a strict rule — no hats for any reason."

McCaskill noted, "I'm not aware of any time a hat is allowed on the floor of the Senate," emphasizing, "I'm not as familiar with the House rules, but you could never wear a hat on the floor of the Senate. So, I'm not sure, other than, if the speaker just doesn't want to have the sergeant at arms tell her to remove it, because if he did, they'd probably remove him from speaker tomorrow. [Greene] would file the motion."

Since becoming speaker in October, Johnson has found himself in a position similar to his predecessor, US Rep.Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), when it comes to his inability to please all fellow Republican House members. Greene, an ally of McCarthy's, has been critical of Johnson's leadership regarding his willingness to join Democrats in securing a bipartisan US government spending package in order to prevent a shutdown.
