For weeks after his widely criticized debate against Donald Trump, President Joe Biden seemed adamant about staying in the race.

But on Sunday, July 21, Biden officially ended his reelection campaign and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for president.

Former Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Missouri) weighed in on this major development during an appearance on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" the next day.

Asked how Harris will fare against GOP nominee Donald Trump if she does, in fact, become the Democratic presidential nominee, McCaskill told host Mika Brzezinski, "Well, she's going to be terrific. What you saw yesterday was excitement, but it was really tempered, Mika. The excitement was tempered by an overwhelming sense of gratitude, respect for a selfless patriot."

McCaskill continued, "You look at Donald Trump, and he is the walking definition of selfish. You look at Joe Biden, he is the walking definition of selflessness and putting his country before everything else. And he always has in his entire career."

The Missouri Democrat and MSNBC pundit noted that after Biden ended his campaign, there was "a lot of support that poured out for Kamala Harris" — which, she predicted, is "going to just build."

"With every day that passes and the blessing and the push by Joe Biden," McCaskill told Brzezinski, "Kamala Harris is going to be the second woman nominated for president by the Democratic Party."
