Michigan GOP chair: 'I just laugh so hard' at anger over Holocaust tweet
Michigan Republican Party Chair and failed 2022 secretary of state candidate Kristina Karamo "laughed off" outrage over a tweet that she posted comparing gun control to the Holocaust, according to a recording exclusively obtained by The Daily Beast.
Correspondent Jake Lahut recalled that "the tweet amplified the popular right-wing argument that the Nazis' campaign of systematic mass murder was possible because of gun ownership restrictions. On top of an image of wedding rings left behind by murdered Jews, the Michigan GOP tweet reads: 'Before they collected all these wedding rings… they collected all the guns.'"
At the May 17th Lincoln Day dinner in Montcalm County, Kararamo brushed off the bipartisan condemnation that her post sparked as "hilarious, completely hilarious."
But Karamo was not finished.
"They're still going on and on about that," Karamo said, per Lahut. "'Are you going to apologize?' I'm like really, are you guys still going on about this?"
Karamo, who is Black, also complained that "I get this mail and it's about how I'm encouraging white supremacy and xenophobia all this… I just laugh so hard."
Although Karamo was defeated in 2022 by Michigan's incumbent Democratic Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, Lahut noted that "as Karamo's career trajectory shows, in today's GOP, election blowouts are no impediment to personal success for rising MAGA leaders."
