In a Washington Post column published on the 4th of July, one of the most famous Never Trump conservatives in the United States — 84-year-old George Will — argued that Texas' 2026 U.S. Senate race just might be in play for Democrats if State Attorney General Ken Paxton is the nominee. Will stressed that although incumbent Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) would be extremely hard to beat in a general election, polls were showing his very divisive GOP primary challenger, Paxton, with decisive leads.

Will noted that a Democrat hasn't won a U.S. Senate race in Texas since 1986 and that Texas Democrats have "lost all statewide elections since 1994," but the conservative columnist believes that Paxton is so "markedly discordant with today's Texas" that Lone Star Republicans could "surrender their considerable advantages" if Paxton is the nominee instead of Cornyn.

Now, according to NOTUS' Reese Gorman, Texas' U.S. Senate race is becoming even more intense thanks to talk of Rep. Wesley Hunt (R-Texas) jumping in.

"For months now," Gorman explains in an article published on July 25, "Rep. Wesley Hunt has quietly been positioning himself to run for the Senate if Sen. John Cornyn drops out of the race. But as the campaign heats up and Cornyn looks more intent on running, Hunt is getting louder about Cornyn's electability. His attempts to go after one of the close-knit Texas GOP's own haven't gone unnoticed…. Republicans are getting increasingly concerned about the Texas Senate race."

Gorman adds, "Public and private polling continues to show Cornyn trailing Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton significantly in the primary, and Paxton trailing notable Democrats in a hypothetical general election matchup. The situation has led Hunt to position himself as an alternative — someone who could win both the primary and the general election. But as he tries to make that case, some Republicans think he's overstepped his bounds."

Hunt, a strident MAGA Republican known for his far-right theatrics, isn't universally loved by members of his party. And if he decides to run and becomes the GOP nominee, his competition in the general election might be former Rep. Colin Allred (D-Texas) — who ran against incumbent Sen. Ted Cruz in 2024 and lost by 9 percent.

A Texas Republican, interviewed by NOTUS on condition of anonymity, said of Hunt, "There's 25 of us in the delegation, and I'd say he is the least liked out of everybody."

A GOP operative, also quoted anonymously, said that Hunt's team is annoying the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) as well as the Senate Leadership Fund.

That source told NOTUS, "They’ve p----- off the White House because they're so badgering. The way they've gone along operating is very arrogant and unsophisticated, and they've been told by multiple folks they need to pump the brakes."
