'Don’t make these people martyrs': House GOP fears Harris-Walz probes could 'backfire politically'

As the 2024 Democratic National Convention gets underway in Chicago, GOP leaders in the U.S. House of Representatives are pursuing investigations of Vice President Kamala Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz.
In an article published on Monday, August 19 — the opening day of the convention — Axios' Andrew Solender reports that some House Republicans fear these probes "could potentially backfire politically."
One of those GOP lawmakers, interviewed on condition of anonymity, told Axios, "We have an election to win. Don't make these people martyrs."

Rep. Don Bacon (R-Nebraska), meanwhile, told Axios that investigating Harris and Walz is "fair" but cautioned fellow Republicans to "handle it professionally."
Solender notes that while House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-Kentucky) probes Harris' handling of migrants at the U.S./Mexico border, House Armed Services Committee Chairman Jim Banks (R-Indiana) has been investigating the way Walz described his time in the U.S. Army National Guard.
Rep. Dan Goldman (D-New York) argues that these investigations are motivated by pure partisanship.
Goldman told Axios, "I don't think any rational person would see this as anything other than continuing to use official congressional authority, improperly, to help Donald Trump's electoral goals."
